In my time Naushad, Shankar Jaikishen, O.P.Nayyar, S.D. Burman, Vasant Desai, C. Ramchandra , Ravi, Madan Mohan, Chitra Gupta, Salil Choudhary, S.N.Tripathi, Khayyam, Kalyanji Anandji  and many others were all great music directors. Nowadays good music directors are limited.

true rehman has got the highest fame but not necessary the talent might not be as good as RD/kishoret,

i am bigger fan of Kishore kumar, more for his soft & sad songs, rd rocks when it is fast or innovative music

A.R.Rehman is a current affair musician Current Youth people want Mass music which sounds hard /fast and strong as now a days the culture is become such that youth want the Mass music. So this is not fair to compare A.R.R with R.D. and I.R.

In old days people are soft and accordingly they like the soft music of R.D., I.R etc.

And the most is that A.R and tried new thing not followed the old things regularly and bring the revolution in the Indian Music.

You should only  recognized  by the world when you are unique or done some thing  uniquely the same thing which every one doing in the related field that is what done by Mr.A.R.R.

if you go by horoscopes, certainly RDB and IR are more talented and have divine blessings compared to others

ARR has more popularity after winning oscar but after few years people will not listen to his old tracks but still listen to RDB and IR old tracks

Talent wise, Ilayaraja is a real genius and so as RD Burman. Nobody else can match them. Their varieties, compositions, melody and sheer mesmerism with their tunes can't be matched.

But recognitions wise, yes AR Rahman has reached the peaks which no other Music Directors haven't. For that matter, most of the Music Directors wouldn't even have known that these types of peaks exist. Leave alone the Academy Awards, Golden Globe Awards, BAFTA Awards and other international awards. He has got 4 National Awards, 10 IIFA Awards and 27 Filmfare Awards which are records unmatched by themselves. Also he has got lots of other Awards.
