Akshay Tritiya is supposed to be one of three most auspicious days, as per Hindu Calender

The buying of gold is considered very auspicious, is booking of house or initial payment for house buying equally auspicious

Also is baby birth on that day considered an auspicious for the new born's future

As far as I know,  it's  one of only two days of an year,  when both the luminaries sun and moon are exalted .

Very true. I have learnt few things from this site over last few years  ... On of them is

Ideally today is a day to multiply your Karmas .... whatever you do today magnifies and never exhausts
Marketers convinced the materialistic ones that gold bought today will not exhaust lifelong .....( i was also a believer few years back )

A day for noble causes for self purification.
Best things to do today in helping the needy and poor ( pious brahnims or old aged better)
- Water and Butter Milk (to beat the heat)
- Footwear/Umbrella/Clothes (to protect body from heat & injury)
- Blankets, Shawls , Quilts , Cushions ( to give them a peaceful sleep/rest after hardworking day )
- Ghee/Honey/enriching foods ( to strengthen immune system)
- Coconut, Betel Nut, Chandan - (used in pujas)
Above will also please various deities including Ganesha, Shani devta, Ambe Mata and all which provide healthy, wealthy and peaceful life
