Introduction to Ferula Asafoetida
Asafoetida is also known as devil’s dung, stinking gum, hing, hengu, ingu, kayam, and ting.
It has strong pungent smell. It gives nice smell in cooked dishes.
In recent times the usage of Asafoetida is drastically being reduced. This was a most common item in kitchen and used in preparation of curries and sambar (Indian recipe) etc. in India.
It is not only an item in foods but also used as medicinal herbs in India by most of older generations. This herbal species is grown in Afghanistan, India, Iran and central Asia. It has peculiar taste of the combination of bitterness and alkali. It is an antipileptic, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, expectorant and antispasmodic and anti-flatulent agent.
This is very good for eyes. It’s proper usage reduce overheat problems, Bacterial and phlegmatic diseases. It is also very good for reducing indigestion.
This should not be used by pregnant women under any circumstances since it can lead to miscarriage !
Ferula Asafoetida Medicinal Usage
Asafoetida or Hing usage for Asthma
10 grams of boiled Asafoetida, and 10 grams of camphire shall be mixed and pasted. Make small tablets from the paste. By consuming a tablet three times a day along with slightly hot water will give immediate relief from asthma
Asafoetida or Hing for curing Ear pain
Take 20 grams of each of Asafoetida, Himalayan pink rock salt (saindhava Lavanam), and dry ginger along with water and make juice of the mix. Add 30 grams of mustard oil and heat slowly till only oil remains in pan and then filter it. After cooling This oil can be used as ear drops. 4 to 5 drops in ear will reduce ear pain.
Asafoetida usage for tooth pain
Boil Asafoetida in water and paste it with 3 to 4 drops of lemon juice and then slightly heat it. Dip cotton in it. Keeping dipped cotton in place where teeth pain is, gives immediate relief from tooth pain.
Asafoetida for treatment of skin burns
Make a paste from Boiled Asafoetida with water. This paste can be used as ointment in place of skin burns.
Asafoetida to reduce piles
Consumption of Small quantity of Asafoetida with fennel seed kashayam twice a day will cure piles problem in few days.
Asafoetida usage for stomach problems after eating
Some people get severe stomach ache after meals. Such people can consume small amount of boiled Asafoetida (2 grams) by keeping inside raisin as capsule. This gives immediate relief.
Asafoetida usage to cure Hysteria in women
Mix 10 grams of Boiled Asafoetida, 20 grams of Vasa churna, 40 grams of chengalva kostu churna and 160 grams of vaividang churna and make powder of them. Taking Mix of 3 grams powder with 100 ml of hot water twice a day will reduce Hysteria diseases, fits in women. Also good in reducing over heat.
Other Medicinal Benefits of Ferula Asafoetida or Hing
Asafoetida helps in countering the effects of long-term alcohol intake, which can cause severe liver damage and even death. Also it helps in lowering blood pressure and beneficial in fighting the swine flu and HIN1 Virus.
Side effects of Asafoetida (Hing)
It can cause vomiting and nausea. Excessive consumption can cause irritation in throat, dizziness, headache, stomach gas and diarrhea. It is advisable to consult a physician to consume in larger quantities to counter specific illness such as Liver problems and nervous disorders etc.
In most cases side effects are temporary and can be treated.
